Blood pressure monitors or blood pressure devices are important for monitoring blood pressure at home or in the doctor’s office. The treatment of observed hypertension is therefore crucial for the success of the treatment.
There are basically three types of tensiometers, namely blood pressure meters and needle tensiometers;
- Automatic sphygmomanometer
- Aneroid sphygmomanometer
- Mercury sphygmomanometer
Automatic blood pressure monitor
The word sphygmomanometer is not easy to pronounce for obvious reasons. Short sphygmomanometers are also called manometers. The automatic or electronic pressure gauge is by far the most widely used measuring instrument in all areas. This is a much less manual monitor that performs automatic functions such as automatically inflating the cuff. It also performs other complex functions that the two conventional manometers cannot perform, such as detecting an irregular heartbeat and detecting high blood pressure in the morning. Both functions are extremely important in the current treatment of hypertension and high blood pressure. This information is used by health professionals along with the symptoms of hypertension to better manage the disease and to better understand the causes of hypertension in a particular patient.
Important blood pressure monitors from Omron’s suppliers include the series, Samsung, Relion, Sunbeam and Panasonic. Automatic digital sphygmomanometers use advanced batteries and software and must comply with internationally recognized and respected verification protocols for blood pressure measurements, such as those of the British Society Against Hypertension (BHS), the European Society Against Hypertension (ESH) and the Association of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI). Electronic sphygmomanometers are generally expensive and range from $50 to $150 per unit in department stores such as Amazon and Pharmacy.
Relatively widespread, but certainly not comparable to an automatic pressure gauge, it gives accurate measurements when properly calibrated. This tensiometer consists of a metal bellows. It expands due to the increased pressure in the cuff. It has a mechanical amplifier that transmits this expansion effect via the lever to the indicator needle. The indicator pointer reads the user by rotating a calibrated circular scale.
Aneroid sphygmomanometers require an unusually high level of maintenance in order to work effectively and efficiently with the desired results. This service includes the verification of a possible deviation every 6 months a year due to incorrect treatment affecting the accuracy of the measurements. In the event of a collision it may be necessary to recalibrate.
When using the needle, the needle must be at zero before the cuff is inflated. Once the cycle of inflation and deflation is over, it should return to the same zero. Aneroid sphygmomanometers are calibrated if their readings deviate from the standard mercury sphygmomanometer by more than 4 mm Hg. In recent years, the production of aneroid sphygmomanometers has further improved, especially in the field of shock resistance, which is crucial for accuracy.
Aneroid sphygmomanometers are not very comfortable to use in today’s market. Manufacturers of pharmaceutical and medical equipment do not seem to be interested in it today either.
The mother of the hypertension and blood pressure meters, the mercury sphygmomanometer, depends on the two blood pressure meters mentioned above for accuracy and calibration. It has been the benchmark for indirect blood pressure measurements for over a century.
The mercury blood pressure sensor rarely needs to be repaired. However, it is clear that in recent years it has been the victim of continuing concerns about the safety of mercury, as well as about the requirements for the use of mercury in the workplace and about attempts to exclude human error in reading measurements. It has therefore been overtaken by automatic digital electronic blood pressure monitors.
From a health point of view, mercury is highly toxic and harmful in the event of a leak. This can happen if the barometer or thermometer falls or breaks. This makes them extremely unpopular for domestic use, for example. A gap clearly filled by automatic pressure gauges.
Mercury sphygmomanometers are a very complex problem regarding the human error of hearing and recording Korotkov sounds (sounds heard by a stethoscope named after its discoverer). Hearing loss and number preference are two important things that make them less desirable for today’s users.
There is no doubt that digital sphygmomanometers are not optimal when it comes to combating human error. New doesn’t necessarily mean better. Each of the three blood pressure monitors examined clearly has its strengths and weaknesses. Of course, the other two, the vending machine and the antenna, always depend on a mercury meter to ensure consistent accuracy, control and calibration.
If hospitals, clinics and other healthcare facilities use anaeroids or automatic sphygmomanometers, they must of course ensure that these devices are monitored by the IMAA, the BHS or EHS or any other institution that may be relevant to their own field of activity.
