The link between fasting and blood pressure has been scientifically proven: Many studies have shown that fasting actually lowers blood pressure. In recent years, many health professionals and individuals have begun to actively consider fasting as an alternative to the therapeutic measure of hypertension. Mail is not a new concept. What we understand best are its benefits. For hundreds of years people have always fasted to detoxify their bodies, but also for religious and spiritual reasons.
The types of items differ, some include only water, others only fruits and vegetables, which in religious circles are called Daniel’s fasting, as it is written in the Christian Bible.
Studies on fasting and blood pressure carried out over the past 15 to 20 years have shown that controlled fasting is beneficial for patients with high blood pressure. In a study originally published in Serbian but translated into English, 110 obese participants, both men and women, were dispatched after three weeks.
At the end of fasting, patients lost between 132 and 118 kg of weight. The maximum body pressure index also decreased, as did the systolic (higher number) and diastolic (lower number) values. The drop in blood pressure was 143 mm Hg. (systolic) to 132 mmHg. (diastolic). This means a drop in blood pressure of 11 mm Hg. This reduction is very important to reduce the risk of organ damage and cardiovascular disease.
The study not only confirmed the beneficial relationship between fasting and lowering blood pressure in obese people after many fasting participants, 88%, had done the standard oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). Insulin resistance has also increased significantly. The researchers concluded that, among other health benefits, three weeks of fasting led to a normalisation of blood pressure and a reduction in lipid levels in the persons concerned.
Two days faster, sharp drop in blood pressure
While the above study was conducted within three weeks of fasting, another study published in 1988 in Acta Medica Scandinavica, later called The Journal of Internal Medicine, showed a sharp drop in systolic and diastolic pressure after two days of fasting. This study showed a very strong correlation between sobriety and blood pressure reduction.
The study involved 11 moderately obese women aged 46 to 62 with borderline hypertension. At the end of the 48-hour fast, women lost weight and saw their systolic blood pressure drop from 158 mmHg to 146 mmHg and their diastolic blood pressure drop from 96 mmHg to 86 mmHg.
The researchers recognised the dramatic drop in blood pressure among the participants and realised that the mechanism by which the rapid drop in calories in the body actually led to a drop in blood pressure is not yet clear.
Water treatment and blood pressure reduction
We’ve said before that there are different kinds of hunger. The link between water hunger and high blood pressure is also interesting for researchers. For some practitioners, the water column is considered a safe and effective method to normalize high blood pressure.
Securing water to lower blood pressure is also considered useful to help people take responsibility for changing health-promoting behaviour in their daily lives.
A study published in 2001 in the journal Manipulative and Physiological Therapy concluded that fasting with water is an effective method to lower blood pressure. During the study 174 participants had high blood pressure with systolic blood pressure values of 140 mm Hg and diastolic blood pressure values of 90 mm Hg. (140/90 mmHg) were delivered to a water point for a total of 11 days.
On the days that led quickly to the water, the participants took the first 2 or 3 days of fruit and vegetables with them before going quickly to the water. After fasting in water for up to 11 days, they were reintegrated into the diet, starting with a low-calorie, low-sodium vegan diet for a week.
The surprising results of the study showed that 90% of the participants had a reduction in blood pressure of 140/90 mmHg, with an average of 37 mmHg for systolic blood pressure and 13 mmHg for diastolic blood pressure. In addition, people with the highest blood pressure have experienced the greatest drop in blood pressure.
The most interesting thing about this study on water hunger and blood pressure reduction is that all participants who had taken medication for high blood pressure before the study no longer needed it after the study and therefore stopped using it.
If the water point is an effective way to reduce hypertension, other approaches should be considered.
Periodic explosion and blood pressure drop
Periodic fasting (PF) refers to defined periods of eating and fasting, usually a day, and was used for weight loss. Recently there has also been a growing interest in the relationship between intermittent hunger and lower blood pressure.
An example of temporary fasting is fasting by Muslims around the world who fast every day from morning to evening during the month of Ramadan.
The study was published in the journal of Ayub Abbottabad Medical College (CMAJ) in 2015 and contains the results of a further 40 male participants aged 18 to 40 with normal blood pressure during the fasting month of Ramadan. Researchers found evidence that blood pressure dropped by 7.61 mm Hg to Iftar and 2.72 mm Hg after Iftar. Iftar refers to food eaten after sunset during Ramadan.
The study showed that intermittent fasting resulted in a decrease in systolic and diastolic blood pressure in people with normal blood pressure, also called normotension.
The benefits of intermittent fasting go far beyond blood pressure and include reduced inflammation, longevity, increased lipid levels, help with neurological disorders and many other health benefits.
The scientific results of the studies carried out so far, regardless of the form fasting takes, seem to show that there is a positive correlation between fasting and lowering blood pressure. This is especially true for those who have not found comfort in the medication or are just looking for a natural way to deal with high pressure.
